Mosin Nagant Refinishing






Refinishing Method: I planned on using fomby's stripper to start things off then use birchwood casey's filler before applying however many coats of tru oil. the store ended up not having the stripper or filler so i only got the tru-oil and another brand of stripper. to start out i had to select my location. the stripper suggested it be one outside or inside with a fan. they also said it must be done horizontally. i chose my garage and hung the stock with 2 wires through the sling mounting holes to make the stock hang horizontally. no i didnt have a fan, so i may have lost a few brain cells which probably doesnt help my already not so bright situation. after stripping i took the rear wire off to let the stock hang vertically as i applied the finish. the stripper was a liquid and after following the directions and letting it wait for 15 minutes it appeared to have just re-dried back onto the wood. after i discovered this i just applied the stripper generously and immediately wiped it off which yielded the best results. i did the whole stock this way once and then did problem areas over until they were cleaned of finish and visible cosmoline. after stripping i sanded down with a 220 grit sandpaper everywhere and then with a 320 grit. its seemed to work well. after sanding i took the air compressor to it and removed all saw dust.
